The ancient link between the Haute Tarentaise and the Aosta Valley re-opens this week on 28th May.

There will be an official ceremony with a blessing from a priest from La Thuile, before the first bikers, cyclists and motorists are allowed through.

The Col du Petit Saint-Bernard has been in use since neolithic times, and is adorned with traces of stone circles, statues, an abby, a chapel and the old hospice of Saint Bernard. St Bernard founded the hospice to help the poor and sick, and to provide shelter for pilgrims along the route.

These days the route is popular with motorbikers, cyclists and motorists and should be open now from May until October (weather permitting!)
