Les Arcs Video Snow Report: 20th January 2016
So fresh and so clean
We’ve clearly done something to please the snow gods and they’ve rewarded us so very kindly.
Since my last report, it has snowed consistently and heavily. Parts of the mountain are reminiscent of an Alaskan winter with trees deep-fried in snow and nearly every rock and tree stump finally hidden away.
There really is something for everyone now, from beginners to experts. The pistes are clean, and now that the snow has stopped, should become more and more playful. Off piste is now an option, however it has mostly been tracked out but there are areas still awaiting a fresh line for those experienced enough to tackle it. The avalanche danger is still there (3/5) so look out for the flags, but the base will be more stable now with the amount of new snow on top and the cold temperatures. There’s a solid 190cm at 3200m and 110cm down at 1600m!
The top of 2000 by the Grand Col has now been opened up as it has been closed for most of last week due to bad visibility and high avalanche risk. You may’ve seen the video of a controlled avalanche there earlier last week…possibly one of the biggest Les Arcs has seen, fortunately it was controlled and no one was at risk. But a great job by the mountain control team.
If you’re a fan of tree runs (like me) then you’re in for a treat, Les Arcs has so much offer in that respect from Arc 1600 all the way over to Peisey-Vallandry and further round. I’d also recommend the pistes in these areas when the clouds descend as they help disperse the mist giving much better clarity in your vision.
But by the looks of the weather forecast, that shouldn’t be an issue this week, sun, sun and low temperatures. Beautiful.
The park in Arc 1800 is being built up with some sizeable looking kickers, which they’ve been waiting for the snow to stop to complete, so I can imagine this week they’ll be finished.
During this cold weather, a nice break to warm the cockles is always welcome. There are plenty of cosy cafes and restaurants dotted around the mountain offering chocolat chaud, vin chaud and an array of delicious Panini’s for a quick snack stop. You can even get a PINT of hot chocolat at the newly refurbished Alti-Bar by the water slide and airbag above Arc 1800…just an FYI.
If you’re heading out this week or already out here, you’ve timed it very well indeed. Bluebird days, heaps of soft snow and quiet slopes. I’m off to explore the resort and see what treasures I can find, hope you are too!
