Mystery of snow patterns is revealed!
by Alison Shayler | Skinets Administration | published 3-Mar-2010
Strange things can be seen from Les Arcs ski lifts on certain days. Like an Alpine version of crop circles, you may have noticed complex geometric patterns marked out in the snow. Alien contact? Divine intervention? Drunken students? No, these phenomena are the work of Simon, a retired cartographer from England.
Simon Beck is a keen snowshoe hiker who, on pleasant days, likes nothing more than to don his snowshoes and create incredible patterns in the untouched snow. His favourite spots can be seen from the Saint Jacques chairlift and the Varet gondola, which have long delighted (and puzzled) locals and tourists alike.
For the past 6 years Simon has been spending 10 weeks each winter in Les Arcs, combining his love of snowshoe hiking with his talent for designing and creating intricate designs. His latest work of snow art is a recreation of the Les Arcs logo; he is also inspired by geometry and the stars. His designs can measure up to 100m and he plots them with the help of a compass.
Keep an eye out for these weird and wonderful sights next time you are riding the chairlifts!
